Best Places to Stay at Sugarloaf for a Ski Weekend

April 28, 2026

Sugarloaf is the second-largest ski mountain in New England — 1,240 skiable acres, 162 trails, the only lift-served above-treeline terrain in the East. It’s also the mountain serious Maine skiers drive past Sunday River for. Because Carrabassett Valley is smaller and quieter than the Bethel-Sunday River complex, where you stay is simpler: you’re either on the mountain, walking distance, or a short drive. These are the three Everrow rentals in Carrabassett Valley, ranked by trip type.

The Bottom Line: For a Sugarloaf ski weekend, stay in Carrabassett Valley for true ski-in proximity or in Kingfield if you want a village base. Below are Everrow homes tuned for ski crews and couples.

The Mountain at a Glance

3.5 hours from Boston. 2.5 from Portland. Snowfields above treeline (Snowfields opens only on the biggest snow years). Most of the developed mountain is steeper than people expect — Sugarloaf skews intermediate-advanced. Brackett Basin off the Timberline lift adds sidecountry-feeling terrain without the hike.

What Makes a Great Sugarloaf Ski Rental

Proximity to the mountain matters more than it does at Sunday River because Carrabassett Valley has less infrastructure — there’s no Bethel village to fall back on. Ski-in, ski-out is a real convenience here. Storage for skis and boots. A kitchen that works for at least one meal a day — dining options in Carrabassett Valley are limited.

The Three Picks

1. Summit Haus — Liftside Penthouse at Sugarloaf

Summit Haus – Liftside Penthouse! — best places to stay at sugarloaf
  • Best for: couples and serious skiers who prioritize proximity
  • Town: Carrabassett Valley
  • Price tier: $$$

Liftside means liftside. Boots off, ski out, no driving. The penthouse finish level makes it feel like a trip, not just a ski weekend.

  • True ski-in convenience
  • Penthouse views over Carrabassett
  • Walk to lodge and village dining

2. The Epic Sugarloaf Getaway (Carrabassett Valley)

The Epic Sugarloaf Getaway — best places to stay at sugarloaf
  • Best for: full-group ski trips
  • Town: Carrabassett Valley
  • Price tier: $$$

The group-house version of a Sugarloaf weekend. Real kitchen, sleeping for the whole crew, gathering space for the end-of-day crash. Minutes to the mountain.

  • Full-group capacity
  • Kitchen built for big meals
  • Minutes to Sugarloaf

3. Sugarloaf Village — Heart of Carrabassett Valley

Sugarloaf Village — best places to stay at sugarloaf
  • Best for: travelers who want to walk to dinner and ski day one
  • Town: Carrabassett Valley
  • Price tier: $$

Sugarloaf Village puts you in the center of Carrabassett Valley’s walkable core. Ski the mountain by day, walk to the restaurants and bars in the evening — the simplest version of a Sugarloaf ski weekend.

  • Walkable village location
  • Close to the lifts
  • Flexible for couples, families, small groups

Getting There and Getting Around

From Portland, Sugarloaf is a 2.5-hour drive — Route 27 straight up through Farmington and Kingfield. From Boston, plan on 4 hours with a stop. There is no practical public transit; rent a car at PWM. Once you’re in Carrabassett Valley, everything is within a ten-minute drive, and the most liftside rentals don’t need one at all during the ski week.

Sugarloaf vs Sunday River — Which Should You Pick?

Pick Sugarloaf if: you ski blues and blacks comfortably, you value above-treeline terrain, and you want a quieter village where “busy” still means you’ll find parking. The trails are longer, the vertical drop bigger (2,820 feet), and the serious-skier culture is the point.

Pick Sunday River if: you’re traveling with a mixed-ability group, want restaurant options in Bethel, or prefer a bigger après scene. Sunday River has more true beginner terrain and a livelier base area, but the mountain itself skis a touch easier.

Beyond the Mountain

Carrabassett Valley has a small, deliberate set of things to do off the snow. The Bag & Kettle is the default mountain-adjacent restaurant. Tufulio’s in Kingfield does pizza after a long day. The Maine Huts & Trails backcountry system runs through here — worth a skin-in lunch stop if you’re up for it. In summer, Sugarloaf turns the mountain bike park on and the 18-hole golf course opens; see the Bethel golf guide for the summer alternative.

Plan Your Trip

Best time for deep snow?

Late January through early March.

Closest airport?

Portland (PWM), 2.5 hours.

Brackett Basin vs the main mountain?

If you can ski blues cleanly, skip a day on the main face and just do Timberline/Brackett all afternoon.

Summer visit?

Sugarloaf runs mountain biking and the golf course in summer; see our fall foliage guide for October trips.
